The Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday it will require the makers of erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra and Cialis to report all of the medicines they sell for $1 a tablet.
Viagra and Cialis were among the more popular products sold by the Food and Drug Administration on the market in 1998 and 1999, respectively. But the Food and Drug Administration recently changed its rules, allowing manufacturers of these drugs to require only that they sell as "generic" erectile dysfunction medicines, or "generic" drugs, on the market. But because these drugs are often less expensive than the ones sold as ED drugs, the Food and Drug Administration and its drug makers must make sure that all of the medicines they sell are approved by the FDA and that they can be sold over-the-counter. So the agency said it will be adding the Food and Drug Administration's own requirements to that, so that consumers can make a good-faith effort to avoid such products.
In an order posted on the Food and Drug Administration's website Tuesday, FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford said that the agency "will be requiring consumers to provide their information about the FDA's decision-making process to determine the appropriate treatment for erectile dysfunction."
In other news, the company has recently filed an application with the FDA for approval of a new drug for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. The agency has also requested that the company add a warning that the FDA has found in a new drug application for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The agency is also reviewing whether there are other new drugs that the agency has identified as potentially dangerous. Among them are an anti-seizure drug that increases heart rate and breathing, an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that relaxes smooth muscle, and a blood pressure lowering drug that lowers blood pressure to a level not dangerous enough for a heart attack. A third drug, a heart rhythm drug, was recently approved for the treatment of high blood pressure.
